Obama Criticized For Living In Lavish Mansion While Most Americans Struggle To Make Ends Meet

“Did you know he has Abraham Lincoln’s bed right there in his own home?” Baltimore-area electrician Caleb Bell told reporters. “He keeps it in one of his guest rooms. Here I am, working 80 hours a week at two jobs, and this guy’s got a whole house full of ridiculously ostentatious status symbols like that. In this economy, I think it’s nothing short of obscene.”

Oh, I guess I should mention that this is from The Onion.

Obscene? To live in a house which for decades has housed the greatest political midns of America? Obscene? To contribute to the hsitory of America? Obscene to make use of soemthign which would otherwise merely be a historical building through which grubby tourists trek daily? If this is obscene then their not doing too badly.

Chris Huhne’s ‘resignation’

Chris Huhne’s resignation has been classed as ‘a loss to both the cabinet and Lib dems’ according to his former [parliamentary private secretary. He was forced to quit following a charge of perverting the course of justice over a parking ticket in 2003. Huhne is the second Lib Dem forced to quit the cabinet after David Laws also quit.

There have been numerous parties shouting the praise of the former Lib dem- namely Ms Willott- cardiff central MP who said ‘“It’s very sad for the Lib Dems and the cabinet to lose a talented politician. He achieved a huge amount as Energy secretary’. While I am sure he did achieve a lot, his resignation is also a testament to the government and law. For many years it has appeared that it was one law for the citizens of the country and entirely another for those governing it. This goes back hundreds of years, the presence of diplomatic immunity and the recent expenses scandal. This may seem like an over exaggeration for a parking ticket, but rather it is a statement on the ministers. It is the law, to pervert that law is dishonest. There is no room in Britain for a dishonest cabinet member, since these are the people we are placing our trust in daily. I for one am pleased to see the resignation as a symbol of the upkeep of the British law system.

Welcome to the big freeze

It’s 2012 and once again Britain is in the icy grip of winter. It has been said the cold weather is causing havoc in the UK. The MET office has issued a total of nine warnings due to icy conditions, with hundreds of vehicles trapped on the M25 and M40. However, for the past 5 years minimum Britain has come to a standstill as a result of poor weather. Surely by now we should have had the forethought to get the means necessary to deal with such conditions? Salt for the roads, trucks to clear it and other such things seem obvious. Countries such as Canada and Sweden who face for more snow than us yearly have yet to come to a standstill.

As a country we have been placed in the top 8 economically developed countries and yet, as a result of poor planning we literally come to a standstill on the whims of the weather. Welcome to Britain in the big freeze, please leave all hope of fast, safe travel at the gate.

London terrorism

Four men have confessed to making plans to plant a bomb in the London stock exchange toilets after being inspired by the radical extremist Anwar Al Awaki.

There are also five other men being investigated. The nine while be sentenced next week but are looking to face a  minimum of 17 years. A hand written target list listed the names and addresses of London mayor Boris Johnson, Two rabbis, The US embassy and the stock exchange.

It is said the four men intended to plant the bombs “with the obvious attendant risk but without any intention to cause death or even injury, but with the intention to terrorise, damage property and to cause economic damage,” Chowdhury’s barrister, Christopher Blaxland QC, told the court.

Undercover anti terror police stopped the plan before it could become too advanced and any dates could be set.

Goodwin stripped of Knighthood

Former RBS chief executive Fred Goodwin has been stripped of his knighthood- a decision David Cameron fully supported. This occured after the Queen cancelled and annulled the knighthood following belief that Goodwin had brought the honours system into disrepute. This is an extremely unusual case as such measures are usually only undergone when an individual has been convicted and jailed. The case was deemed exceptional after it came to light the Royal Bank of Scotland had needed a £45 billion payout from the taxpayer. During the time of the collapse of the bank Fred Goodwin was a dominant decision maker.

Chancellor George Osborne told Sky News: “I think we’ve got a special case here of the Royal Bank of Scotland symbolising everything that went wrong in the British economy over the last decade. Fred Goodwin was in charge and I think it’s appropriate that he loses his knighthood.”

The decision was also welcomed by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, while Labour leader Ed Miliband said: “I think it’s only the start of the change we need in our boardrooms. We need to change the bonus culture and we need real responsibility right across the board.”

One lesson that can be drawn from this look backward at past U.S. migration is that geographic mobility and economic mobility were closely linked for much of the nation’s history. The US had exceptionally high rates of economic mobility in the nineteenth century, compared to older European countries. The second is that going forward, geographic mobility will be less closely linked to economic mobility. The U.S. has become more economically homogenous. Americans now experience, if anything, somewhat less income mobility across generations than many Europeans.
